Django Reinhardt – Guitar
(1910-1953), a Manouche Gypsy born in Belgium, was an influential musician whose short career inspired the genre of music known as Gypsy Jazz. He was an extraordinary guitarist whose unique approach to the instrument, because of an unfortunate injury that rendered the third and fourth fingers on his left hand virtually useless, has become legendary. The group he founded with French violinist Stephane Grappelli, The Quintet of the Hot Club of France, laid the foundation for Gypsy Jazz groups around the world.
This film footage was part of a promotional campaign for the Hot Club’s 1939 tour of England. The tour was cut short when war broke out in Europe. Stephane Grappelli remained in England and Django Reinhardt returned to France. After the war, Grappelli returned to France, but the two never reunited the group and performed together only rarely after that.
